Rugby 7’s Finals

30 November 2018

Glennie contested the finals of the under 14 and under 16 divisions of the South West Sevens Series on Tuesday night. The 14's showed tremendous fight in their semi-final, narrowly going down to Downlands in a high-quality match. One of the very obvious takeaways for this team is that they only had one Year 9 player and a number of girls still eligible to play 12 Years Rugby. They will be very hard to stop in the same age group next year. The 16's saved some of their best Rugby for the finals easily beating St Joseph’s College in their semi-final before a grand final win against Downlands 41-0.

A very big thank you to all parents and staff who attended finals last night. The girls loved you being there and appreciated the support.

To our coaching staff, led by Jason Black, Shenae Ciesiolka and Craig Coetzee, our student coaches, Lily Black, Georgie Daniells and Sophie Hilliar, thank you. Glennie is in great hands and will again be a very strong force in 2019.

Tori lifting again

16 November 2018

Tori Gallegos has been putting her strength to the test again, competing at the Queensland All Schools Weightlifting Championships over the weekend. While in most competitions Tori is represents her club, Queensland or Australia, this time she was lifting for Glennie.

Despite a significant ankle injury at the end of Term 3, which is still hampering her performance, Tori excelled, lifting the winning combination (Clean & Jerk and Snatch) for both the U15 and the Open categories. In the process, Tori also broke the record for the Snatch in both divisions, lifting 65kg, as well as the Clean and Jerk, with 82kg. On top of these, Tori also broke the record in both divisions for the total weight lifted with 147kg. These records were broken at both the Australian and Queensland level.

Congratulations, Tori!

SEQ Futsal

16 November 2018

The SEQ Futsal Team had an outstanding tournament at USQ on Saturday, with three Glennie students, Rosie Peek (Futsal Captain), Izzy Harris and Lauri Galliano playing key roles in their success. The SEQ Team includes elite futsal players from around the Darling Downs. Izzy and Rosie are both regular players for the U17 team, while Lauri filled in on a weekend where the regular goalkeeper was absent. With the U17 Team playing well, it was the team in the Open Division, which featured both Izzy and Lauri, which excelled, winning against their rivals 7-6.

As part of this competition, organisers select five athletes each week to form ‘the Team of the Week’; essentially a team that should beat all other teams based on their performance over the weekend. In the team for this week, two SEQ players were named, both of whom were Glennie girls: Izzy Harris and Lauri Galliano. This is an extraordinary achievement for both girls, especially for Lauri who competed at this level for the first time on Saturday.

Congratulations girls on a great weekend of competition and good luck in future tournaments.

Glennie’s Inaugural Campdrafting Competition

16 November 2018

Over the weekend nine Glennie Girls competed in the 2018 High Schools Percentile Cup Campdraft at Pittsworth. This was the second year of the competition and saw over 600 runs during the weekend, with 26 schools and 180 students competing from as far away as Clermont. Glennie banded together and came 13th out of the 26 schools overall, with Rockhampton Grammar School taking out the title.

The girls would like to say a huge thank you to all involved in making the event possible and the countless hours they spent getting everything together. We would also like to extend a big thank you to the parents who made the time to bring horses and equipment to Pittsworth for us to ride, especially Danny and Cathy Hayes, the ‘Coaches’ for the weekend, who dished out advice and picked cattle for the girls. A massive thank you to the sponsor of our shirts, Campdraft Aus, for making our team look great and stand out in the crowd. To everyone who came to watch, your support was much appreciated.  Thank you Mrs Bellars, who helped organise our shirts, Mr Griffiths for overseeing the process of making a team, and especially Mrs and Mr Cohen who took the time to come and support our new and expanding sport.

Over the weekend the girls had a mixed bag of results, with most of us gaining an outside score and Glennie’s Campdraft Team Captain, Hanna Hayes, finishing in the top 10 scores for the first round. Sadly, on Sunday we did not gain as many points as on Saturday and we missed out on going through to the final but gained some much needed and appreciated experience.

Jo Thieme, one of our Glennie parents, took some amazing photos over the weekend and you can find those for purchase at: http://gallery.jothiemephotography.com/gallery/7965768/ (Thanks Jo). Thank you to Gaylene Stanford for also taking photos over the weekend!

Hopefully, next year will be even bigger and better and we look forward to doing it all again!

Knowles Cup Tennis

16 November 2018

Last Saturday, Glennie B Grade contested the finals of the Knowles Cup Tennis Championship. The Knowles Cup is contested by six Brisbane and two Toowoomba Schools, in a friendly, yet competitive manner. The B's finished third after the regular season and were drawn to play the second-ranked Somerville House in the Semi-Finals. The Good Guys got off to a strong start, but there were a few tense moments as the gap started to narrow. Glennie hung on for a well-deserved victory and progressed to the final where they went up against a strong St Rita's outfit. Despite a brave fight, Glennie couldn't quite get the chocolates and was crowned Runners-Up for B Grade in 2018. Congratulations to Jessica Black, Lauren Officer, Nina Fawckner and Torwen Eerkens on an excellent season. Thank you to Mrs Wisley, Mrs Watts and Mrs and Mr Cohen for your support on the day. The whole squad would like to thank Mr Beutel for his tuition and great humour throughout the year!

Badminton is coming to Glennie

16 November 2018

Glennie is implementing Badminton in the senior PE curriculum next year. Mr Andrew Budnick (Head of HPE Toowoomba Grammar School) kindly offered to run a professional development session as Badminton has been in their curriculum for a while. Five Glennie colleagues attended the session to enable gameplay. At the last minute, Jason Hockaday and Amy Theobald offered to join the fun.  One of Andrew's colleagues, Steve Fryer assisted Andrew in the delivery of the session. We were put through our paces and a lot of fun was had. We were really impressed with Andrew's thorough planning and the fact that he donated his time to support us. We also enjoyed a tour of their new facility.

We are proud of all of their efforts and the competition aspect starts in Year 2.
