Over the holidays, Alyssa Baker was among 360 high-achieving Year 11 students selected to take part in the annual QUT Stem Camp. During the camp, Alyssa had the opportunity to experience ground-breaking research inside the world-class research facilities at QUT and engage in solving some of the major challenges facing our society and the planet today. Alyssa is pictured with other students during the ‘Healthy Hearts’ course.
The 2019 QUT STEM camp was one of the best experiences of my entire life. For five days I worked with like-minded Year 11 students on a project of our choice. I was involved in “Helping Hearts Live Healthier”, which included working as an exercise physiologist in QUT’s health clinic. My group was given a real heart attack patient which we had to complete various health assessments on and create an exercise plan for, which we completed on the last day. I definitely recommend future Year 11 students apply when they get the chance, as I made lifelong friends and got to experience a taste of university life and possible jobs I might be interested in in the future.
