A Message from the Dean of Teaching and Learning (1) (1)

New QCE Update

Last week, the Queensland Minister for Education and Minister for Industrial Relations, the Honourable Grace Grace, published a media statement about the release of mock external assessments for more than 50 subjects by the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA).

The purpose of releasing the mock assessments is to prepare schools for the introduction of external assessment in 2020. They are intended to play a similar role to the ‘past papers’ made available in other states.

The mock external assessments have been released to:

  • allow schools and their communities to understand how syllabus objectives and subject matter will be assessed in external assessments
  • ensure Queensland students have an opportunity to see a sample instrument prior to sitting an external assessment in 2020
  • give schools the opportunity to administer some, or all, of the sample assessments as a practice test in 2020 after their students have completed the relevant subject matter

The mock assessments were developed in consultation with curriculum authorities interstate and Queensland academics and classroom teachers. Each subject has two assessments published in the QCAA Portal. One is labelled ‘School use’ - only available for schools to access. The other is labelled ‘Public use’ and will be published on the QCAA website in mid-August 2019 for students and parents to view.

As a school, we are currently developing plans and timelines regarding the use of these mock external assessments for the support and preparation of our students in 2020.
