Head Lights
Welcome to the Year of Action! We are delighted to welcome Glennie girls back to school. We have a strong team of staff with diversity and expertise and 2015 is promising to be an excellent year. It will be exciting to see the Science Centre taking shape, but we need you to make it happen! Please consider buying one of the elements of the Periodic Table: if you can. We know many families are just getting by, while others are in a better position financially. If you are one of those, please act accordingly. You will be “in your element!”

Head of School
News
A New Year Begins
The start of the school year is an exciting time for students old and new. Kindy got a headstart, beginning their school year on Tuesday. So too did all the new students and the returning Year 12 girls on hand to help with Orientation Day.
On Wednesday, the Year 12 girls were officially inducted into their roles as Senior Leaders at the Induction Service led by Rev'd Kate Powell. Each Year 12 girl received her Senior badge and, in Glennie’s Year of Action answered the charge made by Mrs Ashley-Cooper to lead the School with integrity, courage and loyalty
School Vice-Captain, Jaimie Beeson filled in for School Captain Emily-Louise Coggan who is attending the Youth Science Forum in Canberra.
To all our 2015 Seniors, good luck!

Long Service Recognised
At the beginning of each school term, all Glennie’s staff members gather in the Glennie Room for a staff meeting. At this meeting the School acknowledges Glennie staff members who have reached long service milestones. Nothing shows the strength of a staff community like long service said Head of School, Mrs Wendy Ashley-Cooper as she handed out this term’s long service awards.
Mrs Natalie Bennett, Mr Matthew Russell, Miss Jodie Lutvey and Mrs Emma Kleidon were each congratulated for their ten years at Glennie and said they couldn’t believe how fast those years have passed. Mrs Gillian Edwards and Miss Jacky Redman fondly recalled their fifteen years at the school. Mrs Lesley Walker, Mrs Sue Contarini, Mr Leigh Duffin and Mr Steve Warren continue to thrive in the Glennie community after twenty years. Last but not least, Mrs Deirdre Sinnamon, longest serving this term but not longest serving at the school, has now completed thirty years working at Glennie.
Mrs Sinnamon was approached by a Glennie Old Girl recently about her time at Glennie and she kindly shared; whilst Glennie’s facilities and technology have changed, it’s still as good as it was thirty years ago and, honestly, better.
Glennie – Green and Glorious
Congratulations to our Maintenance and Grounds team for once again delivering immaculate grounds in our school ready for the return of our girls. Mr Russell Pugh, Mr Graham Price, Mr Richard Reading, Mr Steve Pugh, Mr Phil Dawson, Mr Ian Speers and Mr Nick Clarkson work tirelessly to showcase our stunning school to the community and their efforts are appreciated.
Whilst the lovely rain in recent weeks has aided the gardens, it hasn’t assisted our groundsmen with their efforts to complete the new amphitheatre. When complete, this space will be a lovely outdoor addition to the Performing Arts Centre.
Our girls will soon have an outdoor creative venue to hone their skills in the Arts. Stay tuned for some performances to take place at the amphitheatre in the near future.
Works on the new Year 6 Boarding House are almost complete, with finishing touches currently taking place. Gardens are being built to frame this attractive addition to Glennie.
Glennie enjoys benefits of Solar
Have you noticed our shiny new panels on Lawrance Hall and the Administration building? We thank the team at Toowoomba Solar Centre for expertly scaling our buildings and installing the panels. This sustainable and renewable resource is great for our power bills, energy effiiciency and our environment.
This week, The Glennie School switched on the biggest 'solar system' ever installed in Toowoomba by Toowoomba Solar Centre. Over 396 panels will produce 100 kilowatts of free energy from the sun. ‘The installation of the panels will not only save about 17% of our power bills, it is a step towards fulfilling our commitment to seek ways to improve The School’s environmental sustainability,’ said Glennie’s Director of Finance, Mr Jason Hockaday.
Meet Mr Finlay
Over the next few weeks, we will introduce our new teaching staff. Here, in his own words, is an introduction to Mr Jacob Finlay, Junior Years' new Music teacher.
My name is Jacob Finlay and I am privileged to be joining the Glennie School community as the new Music Teacher and Extra Curricular Music Co-ordinator for Junior Years.
Since graduating from St Laurence’s College, Brisbane, and after a successful audition, I was accepted into the Queensland Conservatorium of Music to study a Bachelor of Music majoring in trumpet performance. Through this degree I honed my music abilities in both performance and theory and was given many opportunities to perform in orchestras, concert bands and solo works. After finishing my Bachelor degree I completed a Graduate Diploma of Education.
I have recently completed a 20 month contract as a primary music teacher in Coen, Cape York, at an Aboriginal Academy; one of three academies on the Cape founded by Mr Noel Pearson.
During my degree, I supported myself by working as an administrative assistant and venue co-ordinator at the Griffith University Young Conservatorium. Through my position with CYAAA in the Cape I have also enjoyed a collaborative partnership with the Qld Music Festival organisation gaining further conducting and performance skills as well as fostering professional relationships within the greater music community.
Outside University, I was privileged to play cornet with Australia’s top brass band, the Brisbane Excelsior Brass Band. Excelsior plays and competes nationally, with great success, in Australia’s top Brass Band competitions. I have also played rugby union and rugby league competitively for many years.
I have already noted the girls’ enthusiasm for their music and look forward to a productive and exciting 2015!
Strike up the Band!
Australia Day Award for Shenae
What a pleasant surprise it was to open The Chronicle on Tuesday and see that 2014 Glennie Senior, Shenae Ciesiolka, was named Young Regional Citizen of the Year. Shenae was presented her Australia Day award by Toowoomba Mayor Paul Antonio in a special ceremony at Picnic Point.
Shenae enjoyed a regular spot in the GlenniEnews over the past few years as we tracked her success in athletics, touch football and rugby sevens. It looks like Shenae’s sporting career is just beginning. We hope she can top her sporting highlight of winning gold at the Youth Olympics last year.
Well done, Shenae! We wish you well.

Charlotte Gets a Head Start on Uni
In December 2014, when Charlotte Gehrmann was in Year 11, she was one of 42 regional high school students who completed a University subject through the University of Southern Queensland’s Headstart program. Headstart allows selected Year 11 and 12 students to study an undergraduate unit chosen from science, business, engineering, arts and education at no cost while still attending school. Completion guarantees entry to a degree at USQ.
Charlotte found her studies in the History and Theory of Drama demanding, but she enjoyed the challenge of learning with university-level students. Charlotte’s completed subject will provide academic credit towards future degree studies. She hopes to complete a further USQ course while in Year 12 which will also give her one QTAC (1-99) entry rank bonus point for applications to the University of Queensland.
Morning Coffee
Glennie’s Morning Hospitality Café reopens on Monday, 2 February. This is the most productive training exercise for our Hospitality students. The girls appreciate any support from staff, students and parents. For that reason, the café’s pricing structure is very affordable, probably the cheapest cup of coffee in Toowoomba!
In 2014, the café provided a venue for before-school meetings (and a hot cuppa and piece of raisin toast). This service is available again in 2015 to teachers, students and parent groups.
The Hospitality girls also catered for a number of events held at the school during 2014, and are keen to do that again, should suitable opportunities arise.
The Café is open from 7:30am to 8:30am, Mondays to Fridays, during term time. You can find the Café in the Hospitality Centre beside the Dining Hall.
The Café is staffed by Hospitality students (in training) as a way to develop their service and food preparation skills. With an emphasis on healthy options the menu includes gluten and dairy free breakfast choices, coffees and cold drinks.
The Arts
Welcome!
The PAC welcomes Mr Jacob Finlay to the Glennie Junior Years Music Department. Mr Finlay comes to Glennie with a wealth of experience in performance (trumpet) and teaching and is very excited to meet the girls and parents. Also joining the Junior Music team this year is Mrs Christine Kleidon, whose role will be junior music administration. If you have questions regarding junior music lessons, junior ensembles, junior performances or junior instrument hire, please direct these queries to: kleidonc@glennie.qld.edu.au.
Music Muster
The Middle and Senior Years Music Muster was held at the Performing Arts Centre on Thursday. Girls signed up for ensembles and were given information about new rehearsal times, practice, performances, musical and audition times.
The Year 12 Arts Committee members were on hand to answer questions about the ensembles and encouraged girls to have a go.
Any girls who were unable to attend Music Muster should email Mrs Patrick with the names of the ensembles they would like to join/audition for, or just come along to the first rehearsal and speak with the conductor/director.
Please click here for weekly rehearsal times.
Ensembles
All ensemble rehearsals, both Junior Years and Middle and Senior Years will commence in the week starting Monday, 2 February. For any ensembles that are auditioned, auditions will be held during their normal rehearsal times throughout the week. There are some changes to the auditions for next week:
Junior Years: Auditions for Junior Chamber Strings and Junior Quartet will be held during Wednesday lunchtime next week. Girls are to bring a piece of music to play and their instrument to the music rooms at the start of lunch. Junior Chamber strings rehearses on Tuesday morning at which time girls can come and "play out the cobwebs" before their auditions on Wednesday.
Middle and Senior Years: All auditions (Glennie Singers, Glennie/Grammar Orchestra, Jazz ensemble) will take place during normal rehearsal times next week. String ensemble, String Quartet and Chamber strings auditions will take place Wednesday afternoon from 3:30pm. There are no rehearsals earlier in the week for these three groups.

Music Camp 2015 is next week! All girls will be leaving at lunchtime Friday, 6 February. Junior girls leave from the Assembly Hall bus stop. Years 7 to 12 campers depart from the PAC. All forms and payments should have been submitted. If you haven't finalised your daughter's camp yet, please do so as soon as possible. Final acceptance day for both forms and payments is Tuesday, 3 February. Please be aware that school fees must be up to date, and the camp payment is not able to be added to your school account.

Sports
Glennie Sports Portal
During 2015, I am keen to improve the amount of information and level of communication on the Glennie Sports Portal page. This has already begun with more to come. Importantly, all sports sign-up sheets from Sports Muster are under each of the respective sports. They can be printed, with the last page to be returned to the Sports Office.
Mr Greg Convery
Head of Sport
Sports Muster
Members of the Year 12 Sports Committee were on hand at the Sports Muster on Friday afternoon to help encourage girls to sign up to play Club G Sports this term. The Glennie Sports Supporters sausage sizzle helped attract the girls to the Sports Office and there was a queue not only for sausages but to sign up to the various sports on offer.
If your daughter missed the Sports Muster, she can still sign on via the Sports pages on the Portal

Glennie Athletic Program
The new version of the Glennie Athletic Program (GAP) has been uploaded to the Sports Portal page. Everything is in place for a start on Monday, 9 February. In conjunction with the GAP program, a ‘Bricks and Mortar’ program has been added which will run on Thursday mornings. Bricks and Mortar is not a fitness program, rather a specifically targeted program to improve running biomechanics. Research suggests girls have a higher incidence rate of ACL knee injuries, hamstring issues and overall running alignment problems than boys. This program will give girls the opportunity to begin correct tehcniques for running, change of direction and even jumping and landing which they can then take to training sessions.
Documents for the GAP program and the Bricks and Mortar program are on the Sports Portal page. Below is the training timetable which begins on Monday, 9 February.

Host Families Urgently Needed
On Thursday, 5 March a group of 38 girls from Kyoto Girls Junior High School in Japan will visit Glennie for their annual two week study tour. Each year, the Glennie community opens their homes to our Japanese visitors. So far, 12 students have been placed with a homestay family, so we still have a way to go.
Becoming a host family can be a culturally rewarding experience for your family. All host families will be remunerated at the rate of $210.00 per seven nights. If you have room for one more for 11 nights in March, please get in touch.
All activities, except the girls’ attendance at The Glennie Fair are carried out during School time. The girls can be supervised after school at Glennie to meet your work requirements.
During the study tour, as a host family you will need to:
- Drop off and pick the girls up each school day
- Provide the girls with breakfast, morning tea, lunch and dinner, including a packed lunch for school
- Speak English to your student
- Spend time with your student to make the experience as memorable as possible.
If you are interested in hosting one or two girls, or if you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact the Study Tour Co-ordinator, Mrs Jenny Black

DEBATING ADJUDICATORS WANTED
Glennie has a strong history of debating success and, in 2015, we hope to build upon our past achievements. We have been involved in the Queensland Debating Union (QDU) Competition for many years and the success of this competition relies upon qualified adjudicators.

Parent Reminders on the Portal
Please don't forget to go to the Parent Reminders section on the Portal. There are important reminders for:
- Middle and Senior Years notices
- Junior Years notices
- and lots more
The Parent Reminders page also provides a link to Junior Years and Middle and Senior Years Morning Notices which have important student reminders and are updated frequently. They are a great way for parents to keep up to date with their daughter's school day.
Once in the Portal, parents can browse for information specific to their daughter's year group, read policies and information booklets and access forms. All this can be done secure in the knowledge that this information is not accessible to the wider public.
Notices - Middle & Senior
Welcome to Middle and Senior Years
On behalf of Tonia Gloudemans (Head of Senior Years) and the leadership team – Russell Baldock (Deputy Head of Middle Years) and John Farmer (Deputy Head of Senior Years), I would like to welcome you all to the Middle and Senior Years at the end of our first week. Whilst it has been a very busy start to the year, we hope that the girls are settled and have a good understanding of where they need to be and when. The teachers and boarding staff have been very impressed with the way the girls have begun the year and how well prepared they appear to be for the new academic year.
The girls have already been introduced to 2015 as the Year of Action. Even though it is early days, they are encouraged to set some personal goals for the year ahead which we intend to revisit often as the year progresses.
Last Wednesday evening, a Parent Information evening was held for all parents of girls in Years 7 to 12. It was quite well attended by parents and carers but, of course, not all parents were able to attend, particularly many of our boarder families. So that those parents who couldn’t attend don’t miss out, the powerpoints and any handouts that were presented on the night are now available on the portal.Click here to access each year level’s presentation. Should you have any concerns or queries, do not hesitate to contact me (evansd@glennie.qld.edu.au) or Tonia Gloudemans (gloudemanst@glennie.qld.edu.au)

DayMap for Parents
All girls in the Middle and Senior Years use DayMap for assessment and timetabling information. Parents can also access a range of information through this portal. To find DayMap, sign in to the Glennie Portal using your parent login, go to the Middle and Senior Years page and follow the DayMap link.
Here, parents will be able to see their daughter's timetable and, by using the Assessment menu, parents can also view their daughter's upcoming assessment schedule. As assessment is completed and grades published, parents can view these results by clicking on the small ID number to the left of the assessment item on items labelled Results Published.
As the year progresses, copies of Interim and Semester Reports will also be available as PDFs in DayMap. Later in the year, we will be launching DayMap Connect which will provide an even wider range of information to parents about their daughter's academic progress. Stay tuned for updates!
If you have any questions about DayMap please contact Miss Alison Bedford, IT Professional Learning Co-ordinator bedforda@glennie.qld.edu.au

All girls will receive a new CAPP form next week. Old forms and points are still counted!! Girls can collect points towards an award for their involvement and excellence in their work and activities.
Tuck shop helpers
If you are able to assist with Tuck shop on Mondays (even occasionally!) please let the Junior Years Office know and we will pass on your details to the Tuck Shop ladies.
Tuck Shop Commencement
Please note that Tuck Shop will not be available on Monday, 2 February. It will be open and ready for business from Monday, 9 February. Please ensure that girls bring their own lunch next Monday.
Morning Drop Off
Just a reminder, for parents dropping off children in the morning, that you should not arrive at school prior to 8:10am as staff are not available to supervise before that time.
When using the western car park, please keep to the appropriate lane as you come through, using the drive through where possible and only parking in those bays marked if you need to stop your vehicle. If there are no spaces available, we ask that you drive around the block and try again. This helps to keep the car park moving smoothly and safely. Vehicles stopping in the drive through lane cause confusion and aggravation to those who do not need to stop.
Many thanks for your assistance in keeping the area stress free!
