Head Lights
Ribbon Day is a very special day in the School's Calendar. Today the grounds are filled with colour - from girls' outfits to the balloons everywhere, the stalls selling produce and the ribbons worn by the girls and staff. Thank you to the Donaldson and Chapel committees, Mrs Sue Watts and most particularly, Rev'd Kate Powell for their commitment in making the day such a success. Their planning and hard work began months ago and much of the goods for sale have been donated by kind and generous supporters of Glennie. All proceeds will go to cancer research. Thank you also to our parents who support this fun, but very important day.

Book Week Bedtime Stories
The Junior Library was a sea of flannelette and slippers on Monday night as the Junior Years commenced Book Week with Bedtime Stories in the Library with Mr Warren, Mrs Suhr and Mrs Evans. Meanwhile the parents enjoyed supper and an informative presentation by Ms Kathy Lee on ‘Achieving Success Learning a Musical Instrument.’ Book Week celebrations for Years K - 6 continue on Monday with dress-up, activities and a performance of ‘Space Jump’.
Possum Magic
Girls in Prep to Year 2 attended a lovely performance of Mem Fox’s very famous book, Possum Magic, at the Empire Theatre on Tuesday. They loved this performance. Thank you to the staff for co-ordinating this event.
West Zone Athletics
Congratulations to all of the girls from Years 3 to 7 who competed in the West Zone Athletics competition at O’Quinn Street oval on Monday. Glennie was again victorious in bringing home the Girls’ Shield. There were personal bests by some of the girls and 14 girls were selected in the West Zone team for the next level of representation. We also finished fourth in the Aggregate Overall points, which includes boys and girls combined. A great achievement! Well done everyone!
Thank you to Miss Potter, Mr Griffiths, Mr Gerrard Keating, Mr Rod Franke and Mr Adrian Laydon for all their hard work.
Glennie iPhone/iPad App is Now Available
Glennie’s very own iPhone/iPad App is now available from the Apple App store as a free download. For Android users, please download the Glennie App from google play.
This App is designed to allow Glennie parents access to information about events and daily activities at the School. It will be updated regularly to ensure that the information provided is the most current and up-to-date available.
Hospitality Lunch a Real Success
The Years 11 and 12 Hospitality girls worked hard on Thursday to provide their last Hospitality lunch of the year for students and staff.
The girls cooked and served up a storm to very happy customers - Well done girls!
40 Hour Famine
Last weekend, 142 girls participated in the 40 Hour Famine. It is an annual fundraising event organised by World Vision, and promoted by the Interact Committee to help raise funds for people in third world countries.
This year's focus country is Malawi, where more than 60% of children live in poverty. For as little as $40, a family of six people can be fed for a month. Although in the past participants gave up food, the range of items that can be given up has increased in recent years. The girls sacrificed a variety of ‘luxuries’, including the English language, furniture and food and in more extreme cases, their eyesight or limbs and even their homes. It was wonderful to see such a fantastic effort from all girls involved.
Although the 40 Hour Famine has finished, donations are still being accepted until Friday, 13 September. If you would like to make a donation, please click on the following link to donate to the Glennie team.

Phoebe Ryman's Speech is a Winner
Phoebe Ryman recently became Darling Downs and South Western Zone Regional Winner in the Legacy Junior Public Speaking Awards.
“Glennie has a long tradition with the Legacy competitions, winning four out of the last five,” says Phoebe. “It was a really proud moment to receive the award, as the competition was tough.”
Legacy Toowoomba assists many widows and families of servicemen and the Legacy Public Speaking competition aims to create new leaders for the next generation of Australian citizens. Phoebe had to deliver a five minute prepared speech and a two minute speech on an impromptu topic.
“My prepared speech was entitled 'Women on the World Stage' and reflected on the legacies that women of the 21st century have been fighting for. I focused on Aung San Suu Kyi and Malala who have both been fighting for human rights.”
The theme for the impromptu speech was ‘you are a candidate in this election for the seat of Groom, what will you do both nationwide and for the community?’
As the winner of the regional competition, Phoebe now proceeds to the National Legacy Competition where she will present again her a five minute prepared speech and deliver another two minute impromptu topic, and also complete a public interview. Good luck Phoebe!
Ribbon Day
Today, Middle and Senior Years girls took part in 'Ribbons for Research 2013' a special fundraising day to support cancer research.
The girls took part in many activities including a free dress day, purchasing coloured hair and wrist Ribbons, and partaking in a feast of food stalls. Tickets have also been sold for a Monster Raffle with some outstanding prizes to be won.
Special thanks must go to the Rev'd Kate Powell for organising such an amazing fundraising effort.
Pure Land Learning Community Lunch
On Wednesday, Mr Warren and Mrs Evans attended a community lunch hosted by the Pure Land Learning Community as a part of the Harmony initiative in building Toowoomba as a model city of tolerance and harmony amongst all people. Guests from many of Toowoomba's organisations attended this event as a means of building networks within the Toowoomba region.
Sports
Football
The mighty Glennie Seconds have powered their way into the Grand Finals with a convincing 3-0 win over St Ursula’s. Undefeated this term, the girls took the lead with constant pressure and passion. Thanks to all the many supporters who braved the cold to cheer us on!
We’d just like to take this opportunity to thank all of the squad for their efforts this year. Your dedication and enthusiasm has been out of this world. Because the squad is so big, not everyone has played each week, but everyone has had some game time and naming the team for the Grand Finals will be an impossible task.
Apologies for an error in last week’s report – Natasha Seig scored the critical goal in the dying seconds of the game. Sorry for this mistake.
Having finished the mid season on the top of the table, the Glennie Firsts find themselves facing semi finals next week and will take on Christian Outreach College. The girls have stepped up the training and have focused their sights on making the finals of this inaugural schools competition.
The Firsts will have a breakfast training run on Tuesday at 6:30am next week, bright and early with beanies on!
Touch Football
The winter regular season has now moved into finals and congratulations to all girls on a great season. Club G A Grade team has progressed into the finals series. Our B, C and D Grade teams all performed admirably in what is a senior competition. The girls showed great commitment and enthusiasm and really stepped up in the higher level of competition.
Our A Grade team play at 5:00pm this Saturday, and it would be great to get as many supporters to come along on the day.
Touch Football Summer season commences on Friday, 11 October for U8s, 10s, 12s and 14s and Wednesday, 16 October for U16s. All interested girls should now have their permission forms and be in the process of finalising their teams. These need to be returned to the Sports Office by Wednesday, 4 September.
Congratulations to the 12 girls who represented Glennie at the SWQ All Schools tournament last Sunday. The team played five matches across the day against Scots, Fairholme, Downlands, St Ursula’s and Centenary SHS. All games were very tough and the girls finished with three wins and two losses to narrowly miss the semi-finals.
Netball
Club G has four teams that have progressed to the finals of the Toowoomba Netball winter competition. The girls involved would love some supporters on Saturday ao why not come out and cheer the girls on. Games are played at 12:15pm, 1:45pm and 3:15pm at Nell E Robinson Park. All of our Netta girls play as usual at either 9:45am or 11:00am.
Good luck girls!
Summer Sport
Sign-ups have begun for the upcoming summer seasons. Futsal, touch football, softball and water polo have all taken place this week and cricket will occur very soon. This summer season we are trialling a new sign on process using a booklet that includes all the information for each sport and a commitment to play that needs to be signed by both girls and their parents then returned to the Sports Office.
The vast majority of girls who sign up for Club G throughout the year keep their commitments and perform very well. This booklet is mainly to help families see all the activities currently on so students can make an informed decision and not cross over any sports. Below is an overview of summer sports on offer and their commitments.
Cricket - training TBC most likely Wednesday afternoon, matches Sunday morning
Softball - training Thursday afternoon, matches Saturday morning
Touch Football - training Tuesday afternoon, matches u/16 Wednesday evening, u/8 – u/14 Friday afternoon / evening
Futsal - training clinics on Tuesday afternoon, matches Wednesday afternoon/evening
Water Polo - training Wednesday evening, matches Tuesday evening
Sports Photos
Thank you to all girls for your patience and prompt arrival for photos over the last two weeks. Next week there is a break from photos due to TSSS Athletics and HPE week obstacle course challenge. Photos will re-commence on Monday, 2 September with the TSSS athletics team and netball. Netball is the largest group of photos and will take place over a number of lunch times.
HPE Week
Next week we are celebrating HPE week and are giving girls the opportunity to compete over an obstacle course. Anyone in Years 7 to 12 can come along and trial on Monday and Tuesday, with a top 10 final on Thursday. There are prizes of gift vouchers to Rebel Sports available for first, second and third positions.
TSSS Athletics
The annual TSSS Athletics Carnival takes place at Harristown SHS this coming Wednesday, 28 August. We have a very strong team this year with all girls training very hard with a range of coaches. The weather forecast is encouraging so we can expect some outstanding performances across the various track and field events. Parents are encouraged to come along and support our girls.
The Arts
Thank You!
Thank you to all parents and supporters who came along to the performances that we have had recently. We do value the encouragement and the organisation that has to happen to allow your daughters to participate in all the events and rehearsals offered at Glennie. This week at Junior Years, Ms Lee presented to some parents the “18 top tips” as to why playing a musical instrument is good for all of us – please click here to see this presentation (previously emailed). This also has details of ways in which parents can be supportive of their daughter’s development not only just in Music but in all the Arts. Please take the time to read through this as it gives some excellent ideas for parents.
Upcoming events
Friday, 23 August: Year 12 Drama performance in Manning Theatre
Friday, 30 August: String quartet performance at the Foundation Charity Golf afternoon
Saturday, 31 August: AXXIOM Theatre presents an afternoon of Horror in Manning Theatre from 4:00pm.

Most of the scheduled photo times (for Middle and Senior Years) are during normal rehearsals but there are some exceptions. All ensembles in Junior Years will have their photo taken on Tuesday, 27 August from 2:15pm. Girls will need to be in formal winter uniform for these photos. Please click here for the schedule of photos and an order form. Orders are due in to the PAC or Junior Years office as soon as possible, or by Wednesday, 4 September.
Rewards Day – Saturday 26 October
Girls in Years 8-12 have been fulfilling their commitments to rehearsals and performances and are in line to be invited to attend the Rewards Day at Movieworld in October. Keep up the good work!
Announcing Music Tour 2014
Concert Band and Big Band are invited to attend the 25th Australian International Festival of Music in Sydney on 6–13 July (last week of school holidays) next year. Some senior students may remember this tour from 2009. The tour will involve a number of performances and workshops as part of the Festival, as well as some sight-seeing opportunities. More information will be sent home to parents before the end of the term.
Woodwind ensemble concert
The Middle and Senior Years Woodwind Ensemble will be presenting an informal concert in the Junior Years Courtyard on Tuesday, 3 September from 8:00am – 8:30am. We invite all girls (and Parents and Friends) to come a little earlier to school, especially girls in the Year 3/4/5 band programs and those learning an woodwind instrument (flute, clarinet and saxophone). This ensemble will showcase some of the advanced skills of the older girls and demonstrate what can be achieved with practice!

Code of Conduct
A reminder that the School has developed a Code of Conduct for parents and the community. This is available on the School Portal. If you have not seen this, it is essential that parents take five minutes to read through this important document.
The Community Code of Conduct has been developed so that members of the School community have clear participation guidelines, upholding the high standards we expect of our students. The code was developed as a collaboration between the School and the P&F. Whilst the School is very fortunate to have such high participation rates from parents and members of the community assisting in a broad range of ways, it is essential that all act in a respectful and supportive way.
Please take a moment by clicking here to read what the obligations are of community members.

Imagine YOU are in GREECE.
Students in Years 10, 11 or 12 (in 2014) and parents and friends of the School community are invited to spend the September and October holidays next year in wonderful Greece.
This will be a tour of cosmopolitan and simple pleasures. Greece is a country of remarkable contrasts. Here you will find the cradle of Western Civilisation; Ancient and modern cities, quaint villages, magnificent monasteries, marvellous markets and magical mountains.
You will also have an opportunity to spend a few days relaxing on the stunning island of Santorini, or take the chance to swim in the brilliantly blue Aegean Sea, sail through the striking caldera and experience the astoundingly splendid sunset.
History, culture, art and architecture, and an engaging people, it’s all here. Try the locally grown outstanding olives, the fabulous fetta, the succulent seafood, or the simply terrific tomatoes and the mouth-watering lamb.
To help you visualise yourself in Greece, take a moment to watch this short but astonishingly beautiful time lapse film of many of the places we will visit next year. Make sure you see the Santorini sunset at the end.

Nominating Grandparents for Middle and Senior Years Grandparents' Day
On Thursday, 19 September, Glennie will be holding its annual Middle and Senior Years Grandparents’ Day.
To ensure that your daughter’s grandparents or guests receive an invitation for this special day, we ask that you complete the nomination form on the Portal no later than Friday, 23 August. Your daughter can use her Portal login or you can use your parent login to access the form.
Nominations received after the RSVP date will not be able to be accepted; however, changes to nominations received by the RSVP date will be possible (e.g. names or cancellations). Invitations to nominated grandparents or special guests will be sent on receipt of the nominations or after the RSVP date.
This form must be submitted to ensure that grandparents or special guests receive their official invitation. This process ensures that the Development Office is aware of their attendance and can arrange the catering and equipment for the day.
Many thanks for your help in making the invitation process run smoothly.

Gardening club request
If you have any old gardening tools, manure or old bales of mulch, the members of the Junior Years Gardening Club would love to hear from you as they prepare to plant for spring.
Andrews Cup Netball
Girls from Year 5 to 7 travelled to Brisbane on Thursday for the Annual Andrews Cup Netball carnival. The girls played a number of rounds during the day and played very well. Thank you to Miss Potter, Miss Westacott, Miss Bullock for coaching the girls.
Year 6 Sydney and Canberra trip
A reminder that we are having a Parent/ Daughter meeting regarding the Canberra Trip in the Year 6 classroom on Monday, 2 September from 5:00pm – 6:00pm. It is important that at least one parent attend from each family, along with all girls. If parents are unable to attend, please send your daughter as important information about the final arrangements will be distributed and they can bring this home to you. For further information please contact Mr Warren.
Father's Day Stall
Tuckshop will be holding a Father's Day stall next week, at lunchtimes on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday (28-30 August). All items will be on sale for $5.00. This is a good opportunity for the girls to find something nice for Dad in time for Father's Day.
To avoid a huge rush on one day, the Tuck Shop ladies have asked that Prep, Years 1 and 2 come to the stall on Wednesday lunchtime, Years 5 and 6 on Thursday lunchtime (due to an excursion on Friday), and Years 3 and 4 on Friday lunchtime. Of course, if girls forget on their day, the ladies will be glad to help whenever the stall is open.
From the Deputy Head of Junior Years
We are very pleased with the pride our girls are demonstrating in their uniforms this term. Shiny shoes, navy ribbons and correct earrings are prevalent and we thank you for your support with this. We are pleased as well, with the courtesy and care our girls display towards each other, which is another sign of their school community spirit.
Formal Uniform Day
On Tuesday, 27 August we will be having a formal uniform day, which means white shirt rather than blue. All girls from Years 4 to 6 wear their blazer and white shirt, (blazer is optional but encouraged in Years 1 to 3). This event coincides with ensemble photographs for those girls involved.
SRC Fundraiser
Our final fundraiser for the term will be on Wednesday, 4 September and will be a little different. The SRC girls would like to donate money to the Ronald McDonald House in Brisbane. One of our Junior Years students was in hospital in Brisbane for an extended time last term, and her parents were extremely grateful for the assistance afforded them by Ronald McDonald House.
The SRC also supports Bishop Nolan, who is planning to wheelchair himself from Toowoomba Prep School to Glennie and back to Anglicare early in September, to raise funds to help local disabled people. It will therefore be a joint fundraiser. It will be a beanie and scarf day. Even if the weather has warmed up by then, I am sure the girls will enjoy wearing a beanie rather than a bucket hat throughout the day. More details later.
After School Hours
Girls remaining in the School grounds after teacher supervision has ended must be accompanied by a parent or designated adult. Junior Years girls with siblings in the Middle/Senior School are not to be supervised by their older sisters. This is why we provide Pitstop for all primary school children. Please ensure that girls finishing sport or other activities, are collected promptly and that siblings are not waiting in the grounds for them. We thank you for your support in this matter.
Winter Sport Uniforms
On days that girls in Years 1 to 6 have PE, Motor Skills or Sport, they wear sport uniform to school, which involves wearing full tracksuit to and from School. They may remove the jacket or pants in favour of polo shirt and shorts if they are hot during the day. However, before they go home they must ensure that they are dressed in the tracksuit.
Panama Hats
Girls are required to wear panama hats to and from School each day, unless it is a sport uniform day.
Playground Equipment
For safety reasons, playground equipment in our Kindergarten, Prep and Junior Years is not to be accessed by students or siblings at any time other than when there is teacher supervision. We have had incidents of parents waiting for their sons or daughters, allowing children to play on this equipment. Unfortunately we cannot allow this to continue. We ask for your support in this matter.
Mrs Brenda Suhr
Deputy Head of Junior Years
Reintroduction of Year 6 Boarding
At the last meeting of the Glennie School Council, a decision was made to reintroduce boarding at Year 6. This will include full-time, weekly and casual boarding for girls in Year 6. For further information regarding costs or availability, please contact The Glennie School Registrar, Mrs Annie Muller on 4688 8807.
Optiminds
Good luck to all of the girls who are busily finalising their preparations for the Optiminds Regional Challenge at UQ Gatton on Sunday. The girls from Years 5 to 9 have worked very hard to develop their solutions to the challenges presented and have managed to do this effectively and without too many disagreements! Learning to work as a team to solve problems and value others’ contributions is always a little tricky, but a great learning experience!
