Smartphone Delay Initiative
In a historic move, The Glennie School has launched the Smartphone Delay Initiative.
What is the Smartphone Delay Initiative?
The Smartphone Delay Initiative is a joint community agreement between The Glennie School, Toowoomba Grammar School, and Fairholme College. Together, our schools encourage families to delay providing their children with personal smartphones until after Year 7.
Rather than a strict policy or rule, it is a shared community commitment. By uniting across our three school networks, we aim to relieve the social pressure on families and create a supportive environment where girls can build genuine friendships, maintain classroom focus, and protect their wellbeing during these critical formative years.

Prioritising Wellbeing, Connection, and Focus
Adolescence should be defined by deep friendships, joyful discovery and curiosity, and academic momentum; not the ambient anxiety of group chats, constant notifications, and algorithmic pressures.
The early secondary years represent a vital developmental window. Delaying personal smartphone access allows girls to navigate these formative years grounded in reality, developing a healthy sense of self-worth from their authentic achievements and face-to-face friendships rather than online validation.
A Shared Community Commitment
One of the greatest hurdles parents face when managing screen time is the social fear of their daughter feeling left out. When individual households try to hold the line alone, it creates friction at home.
By establishing a common standard across Toowoomba’s independent schools, we change that dynamic entirely. When an entire cohort delays smartphone ownership, the pressure to conform disappears, giving every family the confidence and community backing to say, “not yet”.

Why Delaying Smartphones Benefits Young Girls
Extensive research, along with guidance from the eSafety Commissioner, highlights that the early secondary years are critical for neurological and emotional growth. Delaying personal smartphones protects this formative period by supporting:
- Unfiltered Face-to-Face Socialisation. Learning to navigate misunderstandings, read non-verbal cues, and build genuine empathy happens best offline, free from the hyper-reactive environment of comment threads and chat groups.
- Academic Presence. Removing the constant cognitive pull of a phone in a pocket restores deep concentration, cognitive stamina, and classroom curiosity.
- Emotional Health and Self-Worth. Protects young girls during sensitive developmental periods from beauty comparison, algorithmic loops, and around-the-clock peer surveillance.
- Uninterrupted Sleep Cycles. Screen-free evenings support growing minds to receive the deep, restorative rest essential for mood balance and memory retention.
- Capacity for Real-World Passions. Preserves precious hours for music, sport, reading, outdoor play, and family life.
Our duty as educators and parents is to create spaces where young girls can simply be young girls, free to discover their strengths, build unshakeable confidence, and form deep bonds in the real world.
