Do you like a good argument?

7 October 2016

Glennie has a strong history of debating success and, in 2017, we hope to build upon our past achievements. We have been involved in the Queensland Debating Union (QDU) Competition for many years and the success of this competition relies upon every school nominating qualified adjudicators. We are only able to participate in the competition if we provide one adjudicator for every four teams.

If you are interested in becoming an adjudicator for next year, please let us know.  No experience is necessary, all training is provided by the QDU and it is a great way to become involved in this worthwhile community activity.  If you are able to assist or have any questions, please contact Mrs Sue Contarini.

Are you ready for a groovy fun night?

7 October 2016

The Junior Years Family Fun Night is fast approaching and it’s set to be a bloomin’ great night!

The festivities start at 4.30pm on Saturday 22 October with loads of fun activities for all ages. Try and catch a flamingo, make a floral headband, dig for buried treasure – boys and girls of all ages are catered for!

Tickets include a BBQ dinner, drink and dessert. Children also score two free activities where every child wins a prize. As an extra bonus, all children’s tickets booked and paid for by 14 October will receive an extra free activity!

We’re thrilled to have entertainment including some of the talented senior girls’ ensembles, a disco, face painting and photo booth. Stalls selling popcorn, lollies, glow products, sno cones – as well as drinks through the bar – will be available.

It’s easy to book online via the Glennie sales and payments page or tickets will be available for purchase near the tuckshop from 3:00 to 4:00pm on Tuesdays.

The Year 6 girls and families have chosen an easy theme – you can go “all out” in some floral gear or simply put a flower in your hair. Anything floral goes!

For more updates, please feel free to join the Facebook event page.

All Glennie families are welcome at this function. Your support will assist with the purchase of a portable shade cover for the Junior Years stage area. Any left-over funds will go towards further Junior Years resources.

Treasures of the Mediterranean - 2017

15 September 2016

A Historical and Cultural Tour of Greece, Croatia, Montenegro and Italy.

The Senior Years Social Science Department has organised an exciting enrichment, educational and travel opportunity for our students of Years 10, 11 and 12 in 2017 and members of the wider school community.  We would like to offer you and your daughter the chance to spend the September holidays visiting Greece, Croatia, Montenegro and Venice in Italy.  Our Treasures of the Mediterranean tour offers each of us the prospect to explore the rich history, culture and natural beauty of these extraordinary destinations.

Whilst students do not have to be enrolled in Ancient and Modern History or Geography to become a participant, all tour members need to be prepared to support each other and have an open and inquiring mind. Parents are welcome to join us. The tour will take place from Wednesday 13 to Saturday 30 September, 2017.  We are looking at a programme of eighteen (18) days of travel.

I have successfully taken Glennie tours to Greece, Italy, Spain, Turkey, the United Kingdom and Europe and look forward, along with my colleagues, to leading the Treasures of the Mediterranean trip this time next year.

The Expression of Interest Form should be returned to me at school by Monday 31 October 2016.  We will organise arrangements for the deposits to be paid soon thereafter.  Final payments will be made in instalments in 2017. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me by phone (07) 4688 8821 or email duffinl@glennie.qld.edu.au.

Flu Season

2 September 2016

Flu season is still with us and we kindly ask that, if your daughter has had a high temperature, cough or other flu-like symptoms to please keep her at home.

The Health Centre staff are very busy caring for sick boarders at present and, at times, every bed in the Health Centre has been in use. Please make sure your contact details are up to date so we can call you to collect your daughter if she becomes unwell at school.

Now might be a good time to remind your girls of the importance of good hand hygiene and sneeze etiquette (preferably into a tissue or sleeve if no tissue is available).

Become a wildlife spotter

12 August 2016

Australia is a vast country and environmental researchers have set up automatic cameras that are snapping wildlife day and night. Now they need your help to analyse the millions of photographs captured in tropical rainforests, the dry rangelands, and around our cities.

From emus to superb lyrebirds, from bettongs to bandicoots, from brush turkeys to Tassie devils, and even feral cats and foxes—scientists want to know which species are roaming both in the wild and in urban areas.

It is REALLY easy to participate. Just log in to https://wildlifespotter.net.au/

The School Login Code is 90843974 and the password is Glennie.

It starts with a tutorial (really quick and easy) and then goes into the classification.

You are able to choose from six different environments and, once you start, the "Help Button" lets you look at the Tutorial again if you are not sure.

It is also a competition. We will go into a draw to have Dr Karl come and visit. The more photographs analysed, the more entries we have in the draw. The competition closes 11.59pm (AEST) on 5 September 2016.

So please join in, help save threatened species, preserve Australia’s iconic wildlife and help us go into a draw to have Dr Karl visit Glennie!

Photos will be taken in the Resource Room at the back of the Junior Years Library from 12.40pm to 1.45pm on both of these days.

These coping skills include optimistic and helpful thinking, friendship skills, dealing with strong emotions such as anger or anxiety, learning how to change a bad mood into a good mood and developing empathy for others. MFit for Parents.

29 July 2016

Our Middle Years girls are benefiting from the weekly wellbeing program MFit, which is part of the Glennie curriculum. This program helps the girls navigate the sometimes difficult road through the early teenage years. Founding Director of Open Mind Education and creator of the MFit program, Mrs Meg Durham will be visiting Glennie in August to hold special intensive sessions with teachers and students.

As part of her visit, Mrs Durham will also be holding another Parent Information Evening.

  • Date: Thursday, 11 August
  • Time: 5.30 pm
  • Venue: Lab 4 in our new Science Centre.

This is an opportunity for all Glennie parents to find out for themselves how the MFit program works and the ways that it can help their daughter to become All She Can Be. Mrs Durham is looking forward to answering your questions.

Boarder parents will not miss out, as the IT Department will also record the session on video and make it available for viewing at any time.
