Pierre de Coubertin Award

27 July 2018

Pierre de Coubertin is considered as the founder of the Modern Olympics, which began in Athens in 1896. Since then, there have been 28 Olympiads. An award for individuals involved with sport has been created in his honour with hundreds of students around the world receiving the award each year.

Each year, a senior student from Glennie is nominated for the Pierre de Coubertin award. The nominated student must demonstrate sportsmanship, commitment and integrity across three school representative sports. This year’s nominee was Zoe McLoughlin, who has represented the school in Touch Football, Athletics, AFL and Rugby 7s. Zoe shows leadership and commitment to every team she plays in as well as supporting Intehouse sporting events.

Zoe was awarded the Pierre de Coubertin award on the last weekend of the holidays. At the ceremony, Zoe had the opportunity to meet with two Olympians, Matt Denny (Athletics, Rio 2016) and Katrin Garfoot (Cycling, Rio 2016), and to be photographed with them.

Congratulations, Zoe! We look forward to following your future involvement in sport.

Glennie Swimming Club Making a Splash

27 July 2018

On Sunday, the Glennie Swimming Club competed in their first meet for the 2018/19 season at Toowoomba Grammar. This meet was preparation for the upcoming State Short Course Championships, to be held in Brisbane in August.

The team consisted of 27 swimmers, with coaches Garry Shorter and Jeff Davidson with  Swim Team Leader Kasey Koina (Year 10) keeping a close eye on proceedings. Of these swimmers, seven were current Glennie students. Mya Gilbert, Shari Gilbert, Mila Cronje, Cara Cronje, Ryanda Craige, Madi Peck and Holly Campbell all swam personal best times at the meet and are extremely excited about the upcoming season.

Girls and boys from other schools are welcome to join the Glennie Swimming Club. Club nights begin on Thursday 6 September at 5:30pm at the Glennie Pool. Potential members can come and try for the first two Club nights for free. The only limitation is that they can swim 25 metres unaided.

The Club has members as young as five years old right through to 18 years. Swimmers don't need to be attending Glennie to join the Glennie Swimming club.

Hockey

27 July 2018

On Tuesday, two teams of keen hockey players took part in the Darling Downs All Schools Hockey Tournament at the Toowoomba hockey fields.

Glennie started the day with our two teams playing against each other, where Glennie 1 proved to be a force to be reckoned with. Glennie 1 continued their dominance through their round robin games, as well as in their crossover games drawing with Fairholme, while having significant wins against Harristown and Centenary Heights to place them first on the table going into finals.

The final was played against Fairholme, and unfortunately our run of success ended there, losing to Fairholme in a tight game 3-0. The girls in Glennie 1 should be extremely proud of their achievement, as Glennie has not progressed to the Grand Final in years gone by.

Glennie 2 also had an enjoyable day, playing well and scoring goals. Unfortunately, the team did not qualify for the crossover games, but remained at the fields to cheer Glennie 1 on.

Thank you to Mrs Markham, Mr Griffiths, and parents Mrs White and Mrs Carter for their support and advice on the day.

Fillies Back in Action

20 July 2018

The Glennie Fillies team played their first game of the term on Monday while still technically on holidays. Despite not having played football for three weeks, and perhaps even not having participated in physical activity, the girls rose to the challenge of playing an extremely skilled and strong Highfields Team.

There were moments of pure class from both sides of the sporting field, with perfect plays made to give Glennie an advantage. Despite this, the Fillies team lost 3-1, which is a very respectable score against a team who is used to dominating their opponents. Congratulations girls, on a fantastic first game back!
