Pioneer Village Excursion Years 1 and 2

Yesterday, as part of their current History unit, the Years 1 and 2 students visited the Highfields Pioneer Village. The girls enjoyed making damper and learning about how food was cooked and prepared in the olden days. They also had the opportunity to visit various displays showcasing the earliest forms of transport.  The staff at the Pioneer Village enjoyed sharing their stories about how the ambulance and fire brigade worked in the past. Visiting the slab hut provided the girls with the opportunity to see how families with up to 10 children all lived together in one room, with no bathroom. The girls watched a black sheep being shorn and were able to pat the sheep and take home a sample of the wool. A highlight of the day was a ride on the miniature steam train.

The girls were able to relate their knowledge about Benjamin Glennie’s early life to the various displays at the Village.  An unexpected bonus was finding various water sources on display such as windmills, bores, pumps and rainwater tanks, which the girls have been learning about in their science unit on ‘water’ this term.
