The Glennie School’s new state of the art three court indoor Sports Centre was officially opened on Wednesday 8 May.
The official name of the building was announced as The Clive Berghofer Sports Centre. Named as a reflection of Mr Berhofer’s generous financial support of The Glennie School covering a span of nearly 30 years, Mr Berghofer has donated significant funds to the School, benefiting all Glennie girls. Mr Berghofer is a Patron of The Glennie School Foundation and has had a granddaughter attend Glennie.
Adjoining the School’s existing aquatic facility on Vacy Street, the new centre also includes a circuit room for weight training, a spin bike room for cycling, two health and physical education classrooms, a staff room, change rooms, and a new entrance foyer. The multi-purpose courts are marked for basketball, netball, volleyball, futsal and badminton.
The Glennie School Principal, Mrs Kim Cohen, said: ‘The Clive Berghofer Sports Centre will help us to deliver our vision of developing in each Glennie girl the physical potential to be healthy and active in mind, body and spirit.
‘Whether Glennie girls are playing sport competitively or socially, all girls from Prep to Year 12 now have a place to do that all year round, no matter the weather.
‘Sports, health, fitness and wellbeing activities play an important role in a holistic education program and this purpose-built centre puts Glennie at the forefront of girls’ education.
‘As well as providing a space for the whole School community to come together in the one location, the new centre is enabling us to build on our connections with the wider Toowoomba and Darling Downs community by providing a modern facility for use by sporting organisations.’
In addition to funding support from the Queensland Government through the Block Grant Authority, The Glennie School Foundation has made a major donation to The Clive Berghofer Sports Centre through a recent capital campaign.
The Glennie School Foundation Chair, Mr David Russell, said that Glennie is fortunate to have such a supportive community.
‘My fellow Foundation Directors and I are extremely grateful to our generous Foundation members and all of the donors that have supported our efforts to financially contribute to the construction of the new Sports Centre.’
The centre was opened, blessed and dedicated by The Most Reverend Dr Phillip Aspinall, Archbishop of Brisbane.
Donations from families, businesses and Glennie supporter groups were recognised as follows:
