Red Lions Cup

On Tuesday, 6 August, the U19 girls travelled to Highfields to participate in the 2019 Red Lions Cup.

Capably captained by Jess Darcy, this diverse team of our best of the best footballers at Glennie went into battle for the trophy.

Our squad comprised of girls from Years 7 to 12, with the added depth of our NPL girls who are ineligible to play in our regular Monday competition due to NPL commitments. The girls were ready to play and up for the challenge and the A grade division was stacked with local talent. After the pool games, Glennie were placed second and looking good going into semi-finals on the back of a sensational 2-0 defeat of Harristown.

Stanthorpe SHS were our semi-final opponents and the game was a frustrating scoreless draw, meaning one thing - penalty shootouts.

Special mention must be made of Matylda Agius, who stepped up as our third tier goalkeeper and was a standout in that position all day. Right up until the penalty shoot out, Matylda didn't look like the young inexperienced goalkeeper that she is, instead defied the odds and blocked shot after shot from much older and stronger girls!

In the shoot out, Matylda saved the first shot from Stanthorpe, giving us the confidence and the upper edge.

Unfortunately, it just wasn't our day and some outstanding shots and saves were made by both teams, leaving the final score 6-5 to Stanthorpe SHS on penalties.

Well done to all of the team, whether you were a sub or a starter, you were all valuable team members. Congratulations on some great football played and good luck for the rest of your respective seasons!

Best wishes go to Izzy Harris, who could not join us for the day, following a serious injury sustained over the weekend as she did battle for the SWQ Thunder NPL team. We wish you a speedy recovery Iz and we certainly missed you out there today! You'd have been proud of the girls!
