On Monday, the Year 10 Legal Studies students were accompanied by Ms Lee and Miss Beth Wright, gap student and law graduate, to the Toowoomba Courthouse. The girls had the opportunity to observe the court environment, processes of sentencing and an application for bail. Leading up to this excursion, the girls had been following up the Trebeck case in their lessons and were fortunate enough to see a snapshot of this case in the Supreme Court (no jury present). The day was filled with legal conjecture, where they also observed the District and Magistrates courts. Various judges, magistrates, crown prosecutors and members of the police spent time speaking with the girls to help them interpret the proceedings and answer any other court-related questions they may have had. The girls now have a better understanding of court matters, how the court functions, the different levels/types of court and the legal jargon. A big thank you to Ms Lee and Miss Wright for an excellent and very worthwhile learning opportunity!
