On Tuesday, March 5, Big Band students in Years 8-10 as well as selected members from the Year 10 Music Class, attended a concert by The Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra at QPAC in Brisbane. The Jazz Orchestra is directed by Wynton Marsalis, who is one of the finest trumpet players in the world and a passionate music educator. The exquisite sound and professionalism exuded by this ensemble was not lost on the students as they were able to hear incredibly talented jazz musicians, in what is arguably the best Big Band in the world. This experience will undoubtedly have an impact on the understanding and enthusiasm the students have for their music and ensembles here at Glennie. It will also provide invaluable preparation for the new QCE Senior Music Syllabus as it will greatly benefit her musicology, composition, and performance skills.
After the concert, there was a Q & A session with Wynton Marsalis and it was very pleasing that two of our students, Bella Shelton and Harper Lanigan asked him questions. Attending this event was undoubtedly a ‘once in a lifetime opportunity’ and can best be explained as the musical equivalent of having Albert Einstein visit Brisbane.
After lunch, the girls visited the Gallery of Modern Art where the Asia Pacific Triennial is being exhibited. Not only were there many outstanding artworks on offer, but the girls finished a busy day in the interactive part of the exhibit set under the ocean where the students can herd fish into a fish trap, while sharks and turtles swim by.
