This week, Year 6 students had the privilege of dining at the authentic French European Le Relais Bressan Café in the beautiful hinterland near Monteville. In French, the term Relais refers to a hotel or house in the countryside. The Tudor style countryside cafe looked as though we had travelled to the Bresse region of France, arriving to fresh herb gardens, various Parisian crockery items and an open door to the kitchen. We were warmly greeted by owner Thierry and the five course dinner began with menu descriptions en français. Students were encouraged to immerse themselves both in language as well as in the tastes of fine French dishes including Escargots, Coq au vin, Boeuf à la provençale, Ratatouille and of course, Crème caramel. The favourites of the evening likely included the beverage Orangina, as well as the Soupe du jour and the Mousse au chocolat. Students came away from the decadent meal with an enriched appreciation for the cultural traditions of the French. Their gratitude was made evident in a vote of thanks offered to our host. From the accommodating and passionate Chef to the final spoonful, this experience was but a taste of what good things lay in store for French Immersion participants in the upcoming terms.
