Ben's Pop Up Picnic is on again in 2018

16 March 2018

If you were at Ben's Pop Up Picnic in 2017, you'll know this is an event not to be missed! Ben's Pop Up Picnic is a fundraising event hosted by The Glennie School Foundation in support of the School’s building and scholarship funds.

Guests, dressed in white, black or silver, arrive at School ready to be transported to a top-secret picnic site for a day of food, wine, fun, laughter and live music.

You can bring all of your own picnic items, you can purchase and hire everything so it’s there ready and waiting for you, or a combination of both.  This year we have a great discounted all-inclusive package to make your day as easy as possible.

This is a fabulous day out, so get a group of friends together and book your tickets now as numbers are strictly limited. You can purchase tickets at trybooking.com

Mark the date in your calendar - Sunday 29 April; 11.00am - 6.00pm.

Special thanks to our event partners O’Reilly’s Canungra Valley Vineyards for supplying our wine.

If you are interested in donating goods or services for the silent auction, please get in touch with The Glennie School’s Tammy Wilson or Shaz Willmington on (07) 4688 8888 or events@glennie.qld.edu.au

Give Blood for Glennie

9 March 2018

Last year Glennie recorded one of Toowoomba’s highest level of donations. The rules have changed and donors must be over 18 years of age. This doesn’t mean that, as a community, we can’t work together to once again reach our target of 200 donations in a year.

If you are a blood donor, simply let the Red Cross volunteers know that you are donating for Glennie and your donation will be added to our tally.

The Red Cross sent us a link to a video campaign on their website to raise the awareness of the importance of donating.

Events Planning

2 March 2018

As many of you will know, Mrs Shaz Willmington is the School's Event Organiser. Her role is to have hands-on involvement in large events that involve the whole school community. For other events, Shaz will be able to provide advice and guidance to assist you.

To make our busy events calendar run as smoothly as possible, we have introduced an events planning process for all Glennie people planning a Glennie event to follow.

Click on the events planning button on the portal to find the forms you need.

The first step is registering your event using the online form so the planning process can commence.

The second step is completing the event checklist. This planning tool is essential to help make your event a success and reflects our Glennie brand.

If you are planning an event, why not talk to Shaz first? willmingtons@glennie.qld.edu.au

Seeking Homestay Families for Kyoto Study Tour 2018

23 February 2018

In March 2018, Glennie will again host the Kyoto Girls Junior High School during their 2018 Study Tour, which will be held from Wednesday 7 March to Saturday 17 March 2018. We are looking for families for the 35 girls during their stay. The students would stay with your family for 10 nights.

The students would be collected after school on 7 March and will depart in the morning on 17 March.

All activities, except the Kyoto weekend activities are carried out during school time. The students are able to be supervised after school at Glennie to meet your work requirements if necessary.

During the study tour, host families will need to:

  • Drop off and pick the girls up each school day
  • Provide the girls with breakfast, morning tea, lunch and dinner, including a packed lunch for school
  • Speak English to your student/s
  • Spend time with your student to make the experience as memorable as possible.

Becoming a host family can be a culturally rewarding experience for your family. All host families will be remunerated for hosting the girls.

If you would like to host one or two Kyoto students for their study tour to Glennie, it would be greatly appreciated.

If you are interested in this opportunity or you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact Jayne Greenhalgh ladajane15@gmail.com or by phone on 0401 049 641

CyberEducation & Child Protection

2 February 2018

Parents are reminded to visit the CyberEducation and Child Protection page on the Portal. There are links and resources available and the page is updated as new information becomes available. There are useful resources to help your children to navigate the online world with an awareness of the risks and how to deal with them.

One resource, in particular, was developed for The Anglican Schools Commission by Brett Lee (INESS & former Taskforce Argos police officer) to create cyberEducation modules for parents pitched at various levels depending on the age of your daughter.

This wonderful resource is available free to Glennie parents. Our challenge to every parent is to give up one hour of social media or television and use this resource to ensure you continue to do the best you can for your daughters, with regard to their online safety and behaviours.

Mr Tim Causer
e-Learning Co-ordinator

Screenagers

2 February 2018

Are you watching kids scroll through life, with their rapid-fire thumbs and a six-second attention span? Physician and filmmaker Delaney Ruston saw that with her own kids and learned that the average kid spends 6.5 hours a day looking at screens. She wondered about the impact of all this time and about the friction occurring in homes and schools around negotiating screen time—friction she knew all too well.

In SCREENAGERS, as with her award-winning documentaries on mental health, Delaney takes a deeply personal approach as she probes into the vulnerable corners of family life, including her own, to explore struggles over social media, video games, academics and internet addiction. Through poignant, and unexpectedly funny stories, along with surprising insights from authors, psychologists, and brain scientists, SCREENAGERS reveals how tech time impacts kids’ development and offers solutions on how adults can empower kids to best navigate the digital world and find balance.
