AFL girls join DD Squad

4 August 2017

Darling Downs Demons have named the initial Under 17 Darling Downs squad ahead of the October State Championships in Brisbane. The training squad of 33 will be reduced to 23 by the end of August by the Demons coaching panel.

AFL Queensland Regional Manager, Jeff Neumann said “It is an exciting time in the female space with the recent success of the Under 17 AFLQDD girls competition. The 2017 season of our Under 17 girls competition, was the best yet and in return we saw strong numbers trialling for the region's representative side. It was a tough decision to reduce the list from near fifty down to a training squad of thirty-three."

Seven Glennie girls have been selected into Darling Downs Squads for AFL. Congratulations Nell Brodie, Taylah Newman, Ellen Gall, Maddie Malone, Abbey Webster, Courtney Markey - U17; Miranda Broadfoot - U14

The girls rose early on Sunday morning to a beautiful cooked breakfast and headed off to the fields at The Glasshouse Mountains. Our three teams all competed very well and enjoyed mixed results.  It was a very encouraging start to The Glennie Touch Football representative season. Next week the girls head to The All Hallows Carnival then to the South West Queensland Carnival the following week.

Glennie equestrian team triumphant

14 July 2017

Equestrian Queensland hosted the Queensland Interschool State Championships. Over 40 schools attended to showcase their skills in the disciplines of Dressage, Showman, Showhorse and Showjumping over three days.

A team of 16 Glennie girls and their dedicated entourage of parents, coaches and supporters converged on the Toowoomba Showgrounds for three days of Equestrian excellence. Not only were our girls competing for Glennie, they were also hoping for selection into the Queensland team that will ride at the National Interschool Championships that will be held in Toowoomba in September.

The Showman competition is unique to Interschool where all-round equestrian athletes demonstrate a well-developed capacity to present a horse under saddle and in-hand. Glennie riders certainly impressed the judges with their performance in the arena and were awarded the Secondary Showman Champion Team trophy. This is the fifth year Glennie has been victorious. A second Glennie Showman team also performed solidly scooping the honour of Secondary Showman Reserve Champions.

Dressage continues to be a popular discipline with Glennie riders. Navigating predetermined movements with flair, they earned the Secondary Dressage Reserve Champions accolade. Third place wins in the Showjumping and Showhorse disciplines rounded out a truly successful three days of competition.

“All girls are to be commended on their skill and sportsmanship in the face of tough competition,” said Miss Jacky Redman, The Glennie School Equestrian Coordinator.

Riders will now focus their training efforts on the next event, Combined Training and Eventing to take place later this month.

As a school, Glennie had one of the largest teams, being represented by both primary and secondary riders. At the moment, Glennie does not have enough primary age riders to form primary teams so they competed as individuals. Major individual results will be posted shortly. We are able to confirm that Sarah Coggan (Dressage) Piper Wise (Dressage) and Grace Muirhead (Showjumping) have been selected into the Queensland teams with more opportunities for selection at the State Combined Training and Eventing Championships to be held on 22 and 23 July at the Toowoomba Showgrounds.

Results for our Secondary Glennie Teams are as follows.

  • Secondary Showman – Champion: Sarah Coggan, Rebecca Roellgen, Imogen Taylor, Piper Wise
  • Secondary Showman – Reserve Champion: Sarah Coggan, Jessica Black, Holly Wilkie
  • Secondary Dressage – Reserve Champion: Sarah Coggan, Piper Wise, Rebecca Roellgen, Grace Muirhead
  • Secondary Showjumping – 3rd : Kate Bellars, Grace Muirhead, Jessica Black, Shelby Emmerton
  • Secondary Show Horse – 3rd: Holly Willmington, Piper Wise, Sarah Coggan, Holly Wilkie
