Hockey Correction

13 September 2017

Our Hockey story last week stated that Red Lions was the winning team of the Under 13 Girls competition. It was, in fact, Newtown that won the final and Olivia Bourke was on the winning team.

Well done, Olivia!

While it is always great to receive emails from parents regarding Glennie girls’ involvement in club team outside the Club G competition, it is difficult for us to check that all the facts are correct and we trust that all girls have been included.

Darling Downs Athletics

8 September 2017

Last Thursday and Friday, Glennie athletes travelled to Warwick for the annual Darling Downs Athletics Trials. Keeping with recent success at TSSS Athletics, the girls performed very well. The majority of girls qualified to represent the Darling Downs at the State Championships to be held early next term. There were a number of great performances across the two days including:

  • Anthea Moodie broke the Senior High Jump record. This record had stood for 31 years! The old record was set on the same date that Anthea's coach Rod Franke set the Senior Boys record. The record books now show that the master and the apprentice hold records at the same time!
  • Taleah McGrane won all four events she entered - a fantastic effort.
  • Chenille Nona-Yellub had never used blocks before this year and was running in joggers, but this didn't stop her from running the fourth fastest time in the 13 Years 100m. An outstanding effort.
  • A number of girls qualified for multiple awards including Anthea (5), Taleah (4), Emily Baartz (4), Charlotte Lindemann (4).
  • Shona Davidson ran personal best times in both the 100m and 200m. A great achievement on grass.

Thanks to Tanya Draheim, Lisa Cooper and Stacie Broom for their assistance across the two days. Thanks also to the large number of parents who attended and to our amazing coaches, Rod Franke and Tim Davies. Good luck to all girls who qualified for State Championships and to those of you representing Glennie at the Schools Knockout this weekend in Brisbane.

Ribbon Day

1 September 2017

Last Friday on ‘Ribbon Day’, the Middle and Senior Years students and staff came together to raise money for our annual fund raising effort in support of cancer research. Everyone participated enthusiastically, dressing in rainbow colours to reflect the many colours of the cancer ribbons.

As in past years, many wonderful donations meant that we had a great variety of food and other goods to sell at our recess and lunch time stalls; and the members of the Chapel and Donaldson House Committees worked tirelessly all day to ensure everything was sold. At the end of the day, we all gathered on the tiered seating on the edge of the oval for the Monster Raffle draw (with thirty-one prizes!) Mrs Vicki Radunz was our special guest to draw the raffle, as she has supported Ribbon Day for many years with her extraordinarily generous donations of home-made slices and biscuits.

This year a special initiative came from some of the girls in Learning Support, who made bath bombs and popcorn for us to sell. Both were very popular, and the stall sold out by the end of lunch time. Thanks to Mrs Susie White and the other staff from Learning Support who helped the girls with their stall.

Thanks too, must go to the Groundsmen for their help setting up the stalls, as well as the Kitchen and Dining Hall staff, Mrs Gayle Ash, Mrs Vicki Radunz, Mrs Sybil Beeson, Mrs Cindy Ryan, Mrs Susan Rollason, Mrs Karen Smith and some of the Year 12 students for their wonderful baking and cooking; thanks too, to the boarders, for the proceeds from some of their special dinners. We were also grateful to Baker’s Delight for their generous donation of sweet and savoury goods. Further thanks to Mrs Barbara Jesser, Mrs Val Lovell and Mrs Susan Rollason for their equally generous donations of raffle prizes.

I’m proud to say that our total for the day was $9,018, all of which will go to The Australian Cancer Research Foundation. This is the biggest total in the history of Glennie Ribbon Day.

Orienteering Selections

25 August 2017

Laura de Jong, Kasey Lane and I participated in the Queensland Schools Orienteering Championships. The weekend consisted of three different races: a sprint event, a relay and a long distance event.

The terrain for the races was fairly open and hilly, however, there were some complex areas where it was easy to make mistakes. All three of us were able to hold our own in competitive age groups, coming away with medals from the weekend.

From these races, Laura, Kasey and I were selected as part of the Queensland Schools Orienteering Team to travel to Bathurst in the September holidays. We will compete in the Australian Schools Orienteering Championships, representing Queensland against the other Australian states and New Zealand.

TSSS Athletics Success

18 August 2017

On a very warm Winter's day, a committed and enthusiastic team of Glennie athletes travelled to Harristown for the Annual TSSS Athletics Carnival. On what proved to be a very successful day, Glennie won three of the five age groups, won three of the five relays and Anthea Moodie was awarded the Janetski Trophy for the best female athlete on the day.

We finished as the second girls' school overall, however, the final point score must have been very close! Many thanks to Mrs Draheim and Miss Broom for their assistance on the day, our coaches Mr Franke and Mr Davies for their guidance and to the large group of parents who witnessed a very special performance by our girls.

Glennie Grit

18 August 2017

Last Sunday, approximately 50 students in four teams competed in the South West Queensland All Schools Touch Football tournament held in Toowoomba.

The Glennie School was proud to enter two 13 years teams, a 15 years and an Open team in this year’s regional event.  Always hotly contested, the tournament drew squads from Ipswich and Chinchilla, as well Dalby and the local Toowoomba and Highfields School communities.

Throughout the day, players tested their skills, developed tactics and wowed the spectators with some outstanding touchdowns, and strong defence. Teamwork was the key ingredient to each of our teams’ successes, as they all experienced some conclusive wins in their respective pool games.

Our 2017 results have reflected the continued development of the Touch Football program within the School. The 15 years girls finished a convincing fifth, in their play-off game. Similar to last year, one game’s results was the difference between being in a semi-final and in a play-off. The 13B team were also highly competitive winning two and drawing one of their five games for the day.  Well done to both teams.

It was a day of celebration for the Open and 13A girls.  Both teams were convincing winners in their pools, with both teams securing Semi-Final wins to play in the Grand Final. The 13As repeated their successful form from last year, with a decisive win. Congratulations to all of the players and to coach, Miss Abbie Prendergast in Miss Lauren Potter’s absence. The Open girls secured a 1-1 draw at full time but unfortunately could not secure the win after a 4 on 4 drop-off scenario.  Both games showed grit and determination until the final whistle. Congratulations girls, what a wonderful achievement!!

A big thank you to our committed coaching staff, who without a doubt make these opportunities possible. The players and I acknowledge Miss Abbie Prendergast, Miss Elizabeth Campbell, Miss Shenae Ciesiolka, Mrs Kelly Dyson, Mr Brad Griffiths and Ms Lisa Cooper for their efforts not only on this day but in preparation.  We also thank Miss Lauren Potter, who, while absent for this event has been integral in the training of both 13 years teams.

Finally, a special thank you to the wonderful parent group who, not only support their daughters in this sport but continue to show the greatest respect and support for the coaching staff. Your cheers, applause and words of encouragement were appreciated by the players.

We look forward to the selection of the Queensland All Schools teams and the preparations for this state-wide tournament held in Brisbane in October.
