24 November 2017

The Year P to 1 Swimming Carnival was a great event allowing our younger students to showcase their skills in a fun environment. Students swam in three individual, non-competitive races: freestyle, backstroke and student choice as well as a House Team Relay.

A big thank you goes to the Year 6 House Officials who ran the event including race starts, announcing, marshaling and supporting the younger girls in the water. We also thank all the parents and staff for their support at the event.

Happy Holidays from the Sports Office!

24 November 2017

On behalf of all the Sports Office, I would like to wish all members of the Glennie community a safe and restful holiday season. 2017 has been a great year for Glennie sport in general, and we are hoping to make 2018 even more memorable.

I would like to thank the girls for being wonderful ambassadors for the School. It makes it that little bit easier to spend a late night at Futsal or all day at Netball when the girls are just so lovely to be around. As Mrs Cohen has said, girls, holiday time is when you repay your parents for all of the time and effort they put into ensuring you have the wonderful opportunities you do at Glennie. Be thankful to them for getting you to training, cheering you on, giving permission for you to play and generally just being supportive of your pursuits. We look forward to seeing you all in the New Year.

Head of Sport

Hale wins Swimming Carnival

17 November 2017

On Wednesday, students in Years 7 to 10 participated in the annual Margaret Sharpe and Tim Barrett Interhouse Swimming Carnival. This carnival is unique in that students compete against other girls in their year level, rather than their usual age groups. There is a focus on participation, however, students are also competing for the Margaret Sharpe Cup (for the best overall swimmer in Years 7 to 9) and the Dr Tim Barrett Cup for the best overall swimmer in Year 10. Highlights for the day included the Noodle Relay which involved 32 students from each house, as well as the Inter-Year relay which was narrowly won by the Year 10.

Overall winners were as follows:

  • Margaret Sharpe Cup (Joint Winners) - Keeleigh Cauley-Gleeson and Lily Rowe
  • Dr Tim Barrett Cup (Runner-up) - Torwen Eerkens
  • Dr Tim Barrett (Winner) - Caitlin Lipp
  • Winning House  - Hale

Water Polo

10 November 2017

The first half of the Water polo season has begun for our three teams. Glennie Gold has retained their form from last season and are the team to beat in the competition, while our Purple and Green teams are showing that we have depth in our younger years. A number of our Year 12s played their final Water polo game for Glennie on Tuesday night. Glennie continues to be the dominant force in the Toowoomba competition and also supplies the most teams. We thank all of our Year 12s for their years of service and will miss their presence in the pool as the competition continues in Term 1.

Knowles Cup Tennis

10 November 2017

Last weekend, our Open B and Intermediate tennis teams contested the Knowles Cup finals at the Tennis Centre at UQ St Lucia. The Intermediates played Stuartholme in their semi-final and, in a see-sawing battle, were defeated by only three games across six sets of exciting tennis. Stuartholme went on to convincingly win the final.

The Open B team had a very comfortable victory in the semi-final, setting up a final with All Hallows. On a very hot and humid afternoon, the Glennie girls played some excellent tennis in eight competitive sets before an eventual loss.

Open B Captain Molly McKinlay was named the best player in the Open B Competition. She won the same award in the Intermediate division last year - great work Molly!  Thank you to the many parents who travelled down to watch the girls and also to our wonderful coach Mr Beutel. Was it just me, or was there an extra loud cheer for Glennie when the final standings were read out? Thanks for the season girls.

Head of Sport

Futsal 2017 - Term 4

10 November 2017

Term 4’s Futsal season was certainly one to remember, for many reasons! For me personally, seeing the improvement from week to week was really satisfying. Girls who had never kicked a ball before the season, were now setting up plays and scoring goals!

There was never a dull week, from hailstones to power cuts to grand finals. 120 girls in 20 teams took to the court each week to battle their way to the finals.

Throughout the season, the girls played to the best of their ability in the true Glennie spirit that I have come to admire.

Congratulations to the following teams for reaching the Grand Finals in their respective divisions;

  • Pool D - Glennie Gliders (Winners)  V Glennie Shakers (Runners-Up)
  • Pool B 2  - Glennie Flames (Winners)
  • Pool B 1- Glenne Bomb Squad (Runners-Up)

I would like to thank  Hayley Smith, our Futsal Captain 2017 for the enormous amount of work that she has done throughout the whole year. There wouldn’t be a futsal player this year who doesn’t recognise her as the face of Futsal 2017. I would also like to acknowledge Meg McKinlay who was an incredible support and gave so much of her time this season, coaching and helping with our younger teams. As ever, Stacie Broom and Jordan Moy were amazing every week helping with whatever was needed.

Keep a lookout for nominations for the Term 1 schools season.

Lacrosse Challenge

3 November 2017

On Wednesday lunchtime, our annual Year 11 versus Year 12 Lacrosse match took place, in front of a vocal and supportive crowd.

With the Year 12 girls currently playing Lacrosse in their Term 4 unit for assessment, they had the clear edge over the Year 11s who hadn't played since Term 1.

The 12s dominated most of the possession but were challenged by some firey Year 11s who were determined to even up the score.

The final result was 7 - 3 to the Year 12s but more importantly, the game was played safely and in good spirit.

Congratulations to both teams for putting on a great exhibition game for the rest of the School.
