Kasey Lane, Laura de Jong and I (Ellie de Jong) completed a successful nine-day Orienteering carnival in and around Bathurst over the school holidays. We travelled as part of the Qld Schools Orienteering Team, competing in both the Australian Championships and the Australian Schools Championships. The Carnival comprises fast and furious sprint events around university and school campuses, relay events involving three runners on 3 to 5km legs through the bush and pine forests, and middle and long distance individual bush events, including through historic gold mining terrain at Hill End National Park.
Kasey and Laura were part of the Queensland Junior Girls Team who won a bronze medal in the Aus Schools Relay event, as well as third overall team. Laura also achieved silver in the Aus Relay Champs, and bronze in the Aus Long Distance event.
I had a great carnival winning medals in all the Schools events, culminating in being selected as one of four senior girls in the All Australian Honour Team. I competed in an Australian relay team against New Zealand in the final event. This carnival gave the team the opportunity to live alongside the other state teams as well as a NZ Schools team in a beautiful old school boarding house, taking part in excursions, social events and a big scavenger hunt, with plenty of time to make new friends in often spectacular surroundings.
